Clean Up and Recycling Report — May 29

Our Spring Tire Recycling Collection was held in downtown Sharon on May 29. As has become common when we host a tire collection, well over 1000 tires were taken out or circulation to be put to greater good. The tires gathered will be sent to a recycling company for processing to create useful rubber material and to remove and recycle the included steel. The weather was very hot for May, but the work was spread around with the help of a good number of SRW members and volunteers who gave us a part of their Memorial Day weekend. Thanks to all who helped out and a special thanks to Lenny of Lenny’s Auto Service in Sharon for his continued support in our tire recycling efforts. This may be the only tire collection hosted by SRW in 2010. If you know of other collections scheduled for the watershed area, please let us know so we can share it on our web site.

A contingent from SRW also worked to clean the litter around Lake Julia in the F. H. Buhl Park on May 29. The lake level had been lowered for some needed construction that is part of the Casino renovation project. The lowered water level provided us with a rare access to the area around the lake that enabled us to remove some litter both new and old along with a few discarded tires to round out our tire recycling. Buhl Park is a tremendous recreational asset to our watershed community and we are pleased that we could help out. The lake is nearly re-filled so you won’t get to see everything that was accomplished, but you can know that the lake bottom and surroundings are in better shape.
