“It’s amazing, the variety of trash we pull out of the River. Some of it is fresh litter – beverage and bait containers and food wrappers from people who are just careless (shame on them!), or that blows out of trash cans on windy days.
In a few places it looks like there have been dumps for years, and we’ve pulled out old white-walled tires, an Edison brand car battery (production ceased in the 1960s), furniture, shopping carts, bicycles, bricks, siding and other building materials, vacuum cleaners, broken dishes, and more.
None of this garbage belongs in the River. We’re really grateful for the volunteers who are willing to hop in and out of their kayaks and canoes to help haul this stuff out of the River. We wish EVERYONE would dispose of their unwanted things properly, so eventually we won’t need to hold these cleanups and instead we can just enjoy the float downstream.”
